The Voice Session

Not all projects are the same, so to provide an accurate quote it’s really helpful to have a clear picture of what you need. For example, a web video for the latest Apple iPhone is completely different to a web video for a small local gardening business.

Here are a few key details that will help:

  • Who’s the client? If it’s confidential, please feel free to send over an NDA which I am happy to sign. If you can’t share the name, the sector is always helpful.

  • What’s the project? (e.g. explainer video, product video, corporate film, TV commercial, etc.)

  • Word count or duration: How long is the script or final piece? If you have a script, feel free to share it.

  • Where will it be used? (e.g. website, social media, TV, radio, live events, internal use, healthcare, etc.)

  • Where will it be heard? (UK, global, or specific regions)

  • Is it part of a paid campaign? This includes ads, boosted posts or broadcast media. If so, any details on reach (impressions/TVRs) are extremely useful.

  • Usage period: How long will the audio be used for? (e.g. 3, 6, 12 months or longer)

  • Post-production: Do you need fully edited audio, or will you be working with your own engineer?

  • Any specific requirements? For example, syncing to picture or particular timing needs.

If you’re unsure about any of the above, just send over what you have and we can work it out together.

Let's talk about rates

Every voiceover project is different, so there isn’t a single fixed price. To provide an accurate quote, I base everything around a Basic Session Fee (BSF). For professional voiceover artists, this typically ranges from £200–£400 per hour. My BSF is £200, which covers the recording session itself, use of my studio and equipment, and delivery of cleaned, quality audio. It also includes the option of a live directed session, so you can shape the performance in real time if needed.

In addition to the session fee, quotes may also include usage. In simple terms, this reflects how and where your audio will be heard—whether that’s online, on social media, broadcast, or elsewhere. While you own the copyright to your script, the usage licence covers my vocal performance. Fees will vary depending on factors such as platform, reach and duration of use.

For UK projects requiring usage, I refer to the Gravy For The Brain rate guide as a starting point. This aligns with industry standards and Equity guidelines, helping ensure fair and consistent pricing. Generally, the wider the reach of a campaign, the higher the usage fee.

I’m always transparent with pricing, and happy to discuss options to find something that works for your needs and budget.

Feel free to get in touch for a bespoke quote or to request a short demo of your script.

Let's talk usage

Usage refers to how and where your voiceover will be heard, and helps determine the overall cost of a project alongside the session fee. Here’s a simple breakdown of the main types:

Internal Usage
This applies when the audio is used for non-broadcast purposes within your business, such as internal communications or training materials.

Organic Online Usage
If your project will live on your website or social media channels (including YouTube) without any paid promotion, this falls under organic online usage. In addition to the session fee, a usage fee may apply depending on factors such as company size and expected reach. As a guide, this can range from around £75–£1,200 per year.

Commercial Online Usage
If the content is used for paid advertising—such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Ads or YouTube pre-rolls—a commercial online usage licence is required. Usage fees will vary depending on the scale and reach of the campaign.

TV Commercial Usage
For television advertising, a TV usage licence is required in addition to the session fee. In the UK, this is typically based on campaign reach, measured in TVRs (Television Ratings), where 1 TVR equals approximately 490,000 impressions. Fees vary depending on the size and scope of the campaign. The Usage fee for the voiceover can be calculated using the Usefee.tv website.

It can all get a bit complicated so I would recommend contacting my agents at deVine Voices to discuss TVRs and TV Commercial advertising further.

Radio Usage
Radio is generally charged based on station usage. The Gravy For The Brain rate guide is often used as a reference point to keep pricing clear and consistent.

E-learning
E-learning is usually priced on a per-word basis. I offer tiered pricing depending on the level of editing required:

  • 15p per word for raw, unedited audio

  • 24p per word for fully edited audio

A minimum order equivalent to my £200 session fee applies. Depending on how the content is used, a usage fee may also be required.

If you’re unsure which category your project falls into, feel free to get in touch and I’ll be happy to guide you through it.

How does a remote session work?

If you’d like to dial in and direct a live session, all you’ll need is a laptop with a built-in microphone, headphones, and the Google Chrome browser. You certainly don’t need to be a professional director — by collaborating together in real time, you can feel confident that the performance and delivery are exactly what you’re looking for.

Sessions can be arranged at a time that suits you via Cleanfeed, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, or even good old-fashioned Skype. I also offer Source-Connect, allowing seamless connections with studios worldwide.

Alternatively, if you’d prefer me to self-record, simply email over your finalised script. Following a brief call to discuss pacing, tone, pronunciations, and any other requirements, I’ll record and deliver your audio — usually within 24 hours — in a digital format that suits your needs.

For details regarding pickups, retakes, and revisions, please do get in touch to discuss my policies.

Can I attend in person?

If you’d prefer to attend the recording session in person, I would recommend booking a studio session in either London or Bristol with an engineer, rather than recording remotely. I’m located just 45 minutes from Bristol by car and approximately 1 hour 20 minutes from London Paddington by train, and I regularly work with a range of studios in both cities.

I’d be very happy to help you find a studio that best suits your requirements, budget, and preferred working style.
